2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games underway

The 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games are underway in Prince Albert. Over 1,700 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff from the nine sport districts throughout the province will participate in the 10th Saskatchewan Winter Games.

The 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games are underway in Prince Albert. Over 1,700 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff from the nine sport districts throughout the province will participate in the 10th Saskatchewan Winter Games.

The week long games are divided into two separate halves with different sports competing each half. The first half, which is currently underway, is comprised of air pistol, alpine skiing, bowling, Special Olympic bowling, cross country skiing, figure skating, hockey (male), judo and synchronized swimming.

The second half runs from Feb. 19-22. The events include badminton, biathlon, curling, hockey (female), speed skating, table tennis, wrestling and snowboarding, which makes its debut at the games.

Participants will represent the nine sport, recreation and culture districts established throughout the province:

South East - Estevan, Weyburn, White City areas

Regina

South West - Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Maple Creek areas

Prairie Central - Humboldt, Wynyard, Davidson areas

Parkland Valley - Melville, Yorkton, Kamsack areas

Saskatoon

Rivers West - Lloydminster, North Battleford, Rosetown areas

Lakeland - Prince Albert, Hudson Bay, Rosthern areas

North - La Ronge, Buffalo Narrows, Cumberland House areas

Lakeland is the host district and the 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games will be the third Saskatchewan games Prince Albert has hosted. They previously hosted the 1982 Saskatchewan Winter Games, 1992 Saskatchewan Summer Games as well as the 1999 Western Canada Summer Games.

The Saskatchewan Games provide the province's developing athletes, coaches and officials an opportunity to participate in multi-sport games in preparation for a higher level of competition. The Saskatchewan Games are proud of those alumni representing Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. They include:

The Closing Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2014 beginning at 4:00pm at the Art Hauser Center.
