88 years of bonspieling in the Battlefords

The Battleford Curling Rink was the host site of 27 men's teams from the Battlefords and area, as the 88th annual Open Men's Bonspiel was once again underway. The action started Thursday with two draws, and Sunday, during the 6 p.m.

The Battleford Curling Rink was the host site of 27 men's teams from the Battlefords and area, as the 88th annual Open Men's Bonspiel was once again underway.

The action started Thursday with two draws, and Sunday, during the 6 p.m. draw, the four event winners were finalized.

Capturing first place in the A-event was the Bakken rink of Alan Hoffman, Brent Taylor, Trevor Gerein and skip Robert Bakken. The championship win, the team's fifth of the weekend, came over the Christopher rink. Team Bakken also defeated Taylor, Southgate, O'Hare and Kachmarski on their way to the bonspiel championship.

In the B-event, the Team Flasch lost their first game Thursday, but won four straight to take first place. Teammates of skip Doug Flasch were Dean Pylypow, Brian Shutra and Murray Wickstrand. Flasch beat Scheible, Wisner, Teneuik and M. Welford in B-event games.

After winning their first game, the Doug Horn rink lost to Taylor and fell to the C-event. In the C, Horn beat Bill Knight and Lorne Voinorosky to advance to the C-event final, which he won Sunday. Horn's teammates were Steven Pederson, Shannon Kachur and Ken Wood.

Stewart Mitchell, Jordan Hansen and Brian Jordan, along with Knight won the D-event after curling to a 5-2 record in four days. Knight's wins over Nyholt, Wisner and Schultz helped them earn a spot in the D-event final setting up his fourth straight win.
