The Battlefords AAA Sharks earned their third win of the season in their final Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League regular season game.
The Sharks were in Swift Current on the weekend and, after losing Saturday, they responded with a 4-2 win Sunday. The Battlefords end the regular season with a 3-22-0-3 record and in eighth place.
Sunday, the Sharks outshot Swift Current 32-26. In the first period, defenceman Rachel Trach scored on a power play. Brooke Lonoway and Morgan Fraser had the helpers on the game's first goal.
In the second period, the Sharks increased their lead with an early shorthanded marker from Laura Harper. Fraser assisted on Harper's second goal of the season.
Swift Current responded with two goals later in the second period and the game was tied 2-2 heading into the third period.
Latashea Frohlich scored nearly five minutes into the third period for the Sharks and gave them the 3-2 lead. Shania Rhinehart and Jetta Derenoski assisted on Frohlich's second goal of the season.
Derenoski added an empty net goal, as she led the team with four goals and nine points this season, as a rookie forward.
Jacy Akre made 24 saves for her third win of the season.
The day before, Akre made 25 saves while the Sharks lost 5-2. Derenoski and Taylor Cave both scored unassisted goals in the second period for the Sharks, who were outshot 30-26.
With the end of the regular season, four Sharks players have played their final regular season games with the Sharks. Taylor Durocher ends her career with 83 games, five goals and seven assists. Trach has played 113 games recording six goals and seven assists. Rhinehart has played 110 games with five goals and seven assists and goaltender Akre has played 71 games with four wins, one shutout and a .899 save percentage.
The Sharks earned wins against Swift Current, Prince Albert and Notre Dame this season and will now prepare for the best-of-five playoff series against the first overall Regina Rebels.
The first game was scheduled for Tuesday in Regina and Thursday, the Sharks will host the Rebels at Battleford Arena. Game three is scheduled for Sunday in Regina.
The Rebels beat the Sharks in all four regular season games, but in one meeting in December the Sharks skated to a 2-1 loss and will look to duplicate many of the things they did in that game this time around. Regina was as close to perfection as a team can be this season, as they won 27 games and lost one in overtime.
