Starting off the 2011-12 Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League season with just 11 skaters proved not to be too big of a problem after all for the Sharks.
The Sharks hosted Melville Saturday and Sunday and although they lost both games, the Sharks game will have to settle for the accomplishment of how close they were to beating the Prairie Fire and ended their losing streak.
The Sharks' Jacy Akre was busy in net, as she played in both games and faced 64 shots in 99 minutes.
Saturday, the Sharks struck first after a scoreless first period. Just 1:14 into the second, Tori Bonnet scored from Charly Bear and Kendra Gerbig.
The Sharks held that lead until the final two minutes of the second period when Alana Serhan scored on Akre.
The Prairie Fire scored 28 seconds into the third period on the power play and that was enough to give them the victory.
Sunday was a close game again, but Melville led 3-1 after the first and 5-1 after the second and that was how the game ended.
Raeanna Kelly scored for the Sharks with a nice deflection on a point shot from Brook Forbes.
Akre made 25 saves in two periods while Rachel Mitchell shut the door stopping all 11 shots she faced in the third period.
The Sharks struggled on the power play despite a couple of occasions where they controlled the play and were set up in the offensive zone. The weekend total was 0/10 while Melville was 4/19 on the power play.
The Sharks will look to rebound after a long break, as their next action is Oct. 22 and 23 at home to the Notre Dame Hounds.
