Boats from Saskatchewan and Alberta gathered in Meota for the Battlefords Sailing Club Regatta once again.
Although it was perfect lake weather Saturday it wasn't ideal for sailing because of the lack of wind. Saturday, just one race was held, but Sunday the wind was more favourable, which brought the best out of the competitors.
Along with competitors travelling to Jackfish to take part, a strong contingent of local sailors competed.
Clinton Nash of Battlefords Sailing Club placed second in the Opti Class. Optis are small sailboats, suited for young sailors. Placing first in the Opti Class was Sage Trottier of Saskatoon. Third place went to Andre Gagnon of Saskatoon.
The major prize for the regatta was the Saskatchewan Laser Championship, an event held annually in Saskatchewan and often at Battlefords Sailing Club. The championship award is presented to the laser sailor who achieves the best point scoring overall.
Ian Elliot of Calgary Yachting Club won the laser title followed by Issac Bussin of Fort McMurry, Alta. and Louis-Pierre Gagnon of Saskatoon. Locally, Tannis Kemp and Joe Gerlinski of Battlefords Sailing Club raced in the laser event as well.
The two entries in the 420 class were also local sailors. The 420 is a 'double-handed' boat, requiring two sailor to sail effectively. The boat skippered by Duane McCartney and crewed by Stephanie Blais took first place. The boat skippered by Bonnie Haegebaert and crewed by Kathy Johnson finished second.
Twenty-two boats took to the water on the weekend and the Battlefords Sailing Club also hosted a sailing school in the week prior to the regatta. Twelve new and experienced sailors participated in the school.
