For the second time this season, the Battlefords North Stars have earned a player of the week award.
This week, North Star Connor Vermeulen was named the SJHL's defenceman of the week. Vermeulen, an 18-year-old from Saskatoon, earned his first SJHL point Oct. 14 on home ice in the 4-3 overtime loss to La Ronge. Saturday, Vermeulen picked up his first goal in the league and added an assist in the North Stars 9-2 win over Estevan. The North Stars went 2-0-1 on the week.
Vermeulen, who was excited to come to the North Stars after playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with Sherwood Park and Drayton Valley last season, is following in his uncle Jon Schultz's footsteps. Schultz played with the North Stars from 2000-02.
Two weeks ago, North Stars forward Jordan Townsend won the rookie of the week award. During that span, he had three assists in the 4-3 overtime win in La Ronge, including an assist on the overtime winning goal.
