Athletes bring home provincial medals, great results

Hundreds of athletes gathered in Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association's provincial track and field championship on the weekend.

Hundreds of athletes gathered in Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association's provincial track and field championship on the weekend.

The Regional Optimist's coverage area encompasses four school divisions and each had some impressive showings at provincials. Saskatoon won the overall combined score while the local area divisions were Central Valley in third, West Central in eighth, North West in 10th and Battle West 13th. In the district point average per student standings, West Central was first with Central Valley fourth, Battle West eighth and North West 10th.

Paradise Hill's Hannah Josuttes was one of the big winners on the weekend, claiming gold in the midget girls' high jump with a 1.55m jump. The North West Division representative was .1m off the provincial record. Hannah was also first in long jump with a 4.94m mark and second in triple jump, .03m out of first place. Hannah was the overall midget aggregate champion earning 70 points.

Stephaine Kretzer, also of Paradise Hill, won bronze behind her classmate in triple jump with a mark of 10.6m. Stephaine was also fifth in midget girls' long jump.

Astrid Nyame of Maidstone was a four-event medalist, as she earned silver in the senior girls' 80m hurdles with a time of 12.17 and in high jump with a mark of 1.59m. Astrid was third in the senior girls' 100m dash with a time of 13.05 and also third in long jump with a mark of 5.14m. Astird was second in the aggregate standings.

Beth Nerbas of Maidstone was first in the senior girls' long jump tetrathlon event and shot put, which led her to an overall first place finish in the tetrathlon with 2,056 points. The tetrathlon is new to provincials this year and includes athletes competing in shot put, long jump and the 100 and 800m races.

Battle West's gold medal winner was Scott Seidle of Medstead, who was first in senior boys' triple jump with a 13.8m jump.

Medstead's Solomon Rise was second in the senior boys' javelin event with a 46.81m throw.

Danielle Orange of Medstead earned silver with a 30.72m throw in midget girls' discus.

Justine Herle of Wilkie won silver in junior girls high jump with a 1.55m leap.

Jordan Henri of Leoville was third in the junior boys' 200m dash with a time of 24.21, third in long jump with a 5.89m jump and fifth in the 100m dash. Jordan was first in the junior male aggregate winner.

Wilkie's Rachel Mamer was third in the junior girls' discus event with a 27.4m throw. Rachel also finished seventh in javelin.

North Battleford Comprehensive High School's Mikaela York captured bronze in the senior girls' 3000m run with a time of 11:24.94. Mikaela was eighth in the 1500m run as well.

Other Northwest athletes finishing in the top eight in the standings and earning points towards their district's overall standings are as follows.

Hafford's Braden Kowalchuk was fourth in the senior boys' shot put event.

Haley Enns of Medstead was fourth in junior discus.

Connor Deihl of Spiritwood was fourth in the midget boys' 100m hurdles.

Turtleford's David Jack was fourth in junior boys' shot put.

Wyatt Malenfant of Edam was fourth in midget boys' javelin.

Edam's Jared Blaquiere was fifth in midget boys' javelin.

Jasmine Bezugly of Borden was fifth in 1500m and seventh in 800m races, midget girls' division.

Paradise Hill's Megan Kretzer was fifth in the senior girls' 80m hurdles.

Brent Starblanket of Spiritwood was fifth in the junior boys' 800m run and eight in the 3000m race.

Conner Anderson of Luseland finished fifth in the senior boys' discus event.

Beau Drieschner of Spiritwood was tied for fifth in the senior boys' tetrathlon long jump event, eighth in the 800m tetrathlon event, eighth in the tetrathlon shot put and seventh overall.

Kerry Gerein of Unity was sixth in the senior girls' 200m dash and eighth in the 400m dash.

John Paul II's Brooklyn Coburn was sixth in the midget girls' long jump.

Mackenzie Seidle of Medstead was sixth in midget girls' 80m hurdles.

Travis Baldwin of Maidstone was sixth in midget boys' long jump.

In junior boys' javelin, McLurg's Brendon Alm was sixth.

Hafford's Kalin Sitter was seventh in the junior girls' 80m hurdles.

Megan Bryan of Landis was seventh in midget shot put.

Mark Karstens of McLurg was seventh in junior boys' long jump.

Brody Pylypow of Glaslyn was seventh in senior boys' long jump.

Neilburg's Alex Foster was seventh in the senior boys' tetrathlon 800m dash.

Cjardai Ulrich of St. George was eighth in 100m midget dash.

Shantaia Poulin of Spiritwood was tied for eighth in the senior girls' tetrathlon 100m dash.

Colton Poulin of Spiritwood was eighth in the junior boys' 200m.
