Monday night on the Battleford flats was a battle between the two midget teams in the Battleford Ladies' Fastball League, and it didn't disappoint.
The Unity Midgets squared off against the Battleford Midget Bandits in a thriller.
Each team got the bats working a bit in the first inning, putting up a run apiece. The bats cooled off and the pitching heated up. The next two innings went by without a run for either team, giving the impression the game might be a pitching duel.
Unity dominated the fourth inning. They scored seven runs and the only thing that stopped them was the single inning runs limit. Battleford came back on the field determined to chip away at the seven run lead. It was looking like a big inning might shape up as they scored quickly, but that's all they could muster.
The fifth inning went by with neither team putting up a run - bad news for the Bandits.
Unity used the sixth and seventh innings to put some insurance runs on the board, adding to their lead with two runs in each inning. The Bandits finally showed signs of life in the seventh, but it was too late. A consistent barrage of hits gave them six runs for the inning, but they still lost 12-8.
Unity wasn't the only winner Monday night, the Maidstone Iron Maidens pulled off a close victory over the Survivors 4-2.
The season is winding down to an end. Each team has just two games left, though some could play make-up games June 26.
Playoffs get underway July 3. Every game is single elimination, so the ladies will need to bring their A game.
