Thursday, the Battlefords Midget Stars did something they haven't done in the regular season since Oct. 9, 2008. That impressive feat - the Stars beat the Saskatoon Contacts.
What makes the 4-0 win even better, besides the shutout, is that the Stars are two points back of the Contacts in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League standings and the Stars were 10-2-0-1 in the last 13 games.
Thursday at Schroh Arena in Saskatoon, the Stars had a strong three and half minutes in the first period that lead to a 3-0 lead.
In the first frame, rookie Spencer Bast netted his 10th goal of the season. Two minutes later, rookie forward Troy Gerein scored his second of the season from Keifer Hintz and Kent Walchuk. Regan Yew continued the strong first period for the Stars with his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Brian Hillis and Jaiden Focht earned the assists.
There was no scoring in the second period.
Yew sealed the win with just over one minute remaining in the third period with his second goal of the game.
The Stars were disciplined all game taking just eight minutes in penalties and they killed all four Contacts' power play. The Stars were 0/7 with the man advantage.
Rylan Toth was the backbone for the Stars' victory, as he made 38 saves for his second shutout of the season. His sixth win in 14 games puts the Stars in fourth place with a 13-7-2-1 record.
The Stars were on the ice Tuesday in Prince Albert to play the second place Mintos who were 15-4-2-0 on the season.
Next up, the Stars play three more road games. Thursday they travel to Flying Dust Reserve to face Beardy's and Saturday and Sunday they play in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds.
