The Battlefords North Stars jumped into the trade deadline action first, as they acquired a veteran defenceman. It was no surprise Melfort would be sellers this week as they are last in the league with an 8-27-2-4 record and the North Stars got perhaps their most prominent player in a Monday afternoon trade. The Mustangs' top defenceman Mitch Berg has been traded to the North Stars. Berg has played the previous two and half season with Melfort and has also played for La Ronge during the 2008-09 season and played in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades and Seattle Thunderbirds.Berg is a 63, 205 defenceman from Saskatoon that quickly turns the North Stars' defence core into one if not the best in the SJHL. Berg makes it three 20 years olds on the North Stars blue line joining Woody Klassen and Travis Sparrow in their graduating seasons. In exchange for Berg, the North Stars have sent 1993-born forward Jake Daughtry, 1992-born defenceman Zach MacLellan and future considerations.MacLellan has one goal and 18 assists n 40 games this season, his second in the Battlefords. Daughtry has played nine games this season recording two assists with the North Stars.
