Beaver Blues build series lead

In the second season of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League one of the new teams this season, the Glaslyn North Stars, are a game away from elimination.

The Battleford Beaver Blues are in their second season in the league and looking for their first league championship.

The Beaver Blues led the series 1-0 going into action Monday, but Glaslyn won 3-2 on home ice.

Both captains, Todd Heck for Battleford and Ashton Dymytryshyn for Glaslyn, scored goals in the first period. The game was tied after the second at 2-2 after Jeff Heck and Colin Pylypow both found the back of the net. There was no scoring in the third period, and in overtime Jason Nash scored for Glaslyn earning the North Stars the 3-2 win.

Back in Battleford Tuesday, Martin Smith scored four times and had two assists, as the Beaver Blues won 6-1 and reclaimed control of the best-of-five series. Brent Salzl had the other two goals for Battleford while adding three assists in the game.

Mitch Hawtin and Cameron Simkins have played all three games in net for their respective teams and will likely be called upon when the series resumes Friday in Turtleford, as the Beaver Blues look to end the SPHL season.
