Beaver Blues climb to third place in SPHL standings

The Battleford Beaver Blues earned three out of a possible four points last week in SPHL action.

Kyle Litchenwald played a big part in the Maymont Settler's 7-6 overtime win over the Beaver Blues Saturday night in Battleford. Litchenwald set up the game-tying goal and scored the winner with 33 seconds left in overtime.

The Beaver Blues opened the scoring midway through the first period as Brent Salzl scored his first of five goals on the evening. Salzl scored his second of the period with 7:30 remaining in the frame.

In the second, the Settlers cut the lead to one with Taylor Fauchoux's goal 2:12 into the period. Scott Maunula restored Beaver Blues' two-goal lead with a goal 3:37 into the second. Maymont responded with three straight goals. Vince Sauvie struck first five minutes into the period, Mike Pylypow tied the game with 9:46 to play and Austin Severson gave the Settlers the lead with eight minutes left in the frame.

The Beaver Blues dominated the first half of the third, scoring three times in 10 minutes. Salzl scored all three goals for Battleford. The Settlers cut the lead to one again with Tyler Hubbard's goal with 9:48 to play. Pylyplow tied the game 18 seconds later with his second of the game.

In overtime, Litchenwald's game-winning goal with 33 seconds to play was set up by Hubbard and Brennan Strain.

Battlefords was in action again Tuesday night. Keegan Sparrow had four goals to lead the Beaver Blues to a 9-6 win over the Mustangs in Hafford.

Scott Maunula struck first for the Beaver Blues, beating Mustangs goaltender Mitch Wintonyk 6:17 into the first period. Braydon Fetter's unassisted goal tied the game for Hafford with 1:03 left in the opening frame.

Mike Henschel broke the tie 5:22 into the second period, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Sparrow scored his first of the game with 11 minutes to play in the period to knot it up. He broke the tie with his second goal two minutes later. The Beaver Blues found the back of the net three more times in the second period. Mike Nelson, Brent Salzl and Daulton Poitras all beat Wintonyk to put Battleford up 6-2 heading into the third period.

Cody Ryan cut the lead to the three goals with his unassisted marker less than five minutes into the final stanza. Sparrow followed with two goals in 30 seconds, starting with 7:41 left in regulation. Kyle Rivett scored for Hafford with 6:36 left in the game to reduce the lead to four. Travis Keller scored the dagger with 4:43 to play. Clay Casavant and Justin Babiy added late goals for the Mustangs.

In other SPHL action last weekend, the Meota Combines lost 6-2 to the Timberwolves in Spiritwood Friday night. Chris Robinson had two goals for Spiritwood. Bryce Gatzke, Shane Gopher, Raymon Harris and Kyle Miller were the other goal scorers for the Timberwolves. Bo Gervais and Taylor Willsey scored for Meota.

Also Friday, the Shellbrook Silvertips defended home ice by beating the Glaslyn North Stars 10-2. Brendon and Doran Canaday each scored twice in the win. Josh Elliot, Nathanial Martin, Nick Martin, Brett Mason, Tyson Parchoma and Devin Waterhouse also added goals for the Silvertips. Glaslyn's goal scorers were Ty Anderson and Richard Mossiman.

The Friday night game between the Cut Knife Colts and the Settlers in Maymont was cancelled due to weather and poor ice conditions according to the SPHL's website.

There were three other games Saturday night. Shellbrook travelled to Spiritwood and beat the Timberwolves 7-5. Elliot had a hat trick for the Silvertips. Mason, Devon Dicus, Lanny McComas and Devin Thorpe also found the back of the net for Shellbrook. Gatzke had two goals in the game for Spiritwood. Harris, Brad Doucette and Anthony Radke rounded out the scoring for the Timberwolves.

Cut Knife used their extra energy from the cancellation of Friday's game to blow out the Radisson Wheatkings13-3 Saturday night. Kenton and Riley Albert and Ashton Hewson all had two goals for the Colts. Brayden Bertoia, Ryan Constant, Gino Frank, Darbie Koshman, Jason Lloyd, Brandon O'Donnel and Troy Watt also lit the lamp for Cut Knife. Radisson's goals were scored by Brendan Buller, who had two, and Jonathan McIntosh.

The last game of the weekend saw the Perdue Pirates double up the North Stars 4-2 in Glaslyn. Doug Weber scored twice, while Clark McNully and Garret Poletz adding the other goals for the Pirates. Brent Blais and Tristan Deronoski scored in a losing effort for the North Stars.

The SPHL has seven games this weekend. There are three games Friday night; Perdue hosts Maymont, Shellbrook travels to Hafford and Radisson welcomes Spiritwood into town. All of Friday's games start at 8 p.m.

Saturday night sees Hafford host Spiritwood at 7 p.m. Also Saturday, Battleford visits Perdue and the Settlers face off against Glaslyn in Maymont. Puck drops at 8 p.m. for both games. The last game of the weekend sees Cut Knife in North Battleford to take on Meota Saturday. The game starts at 8:30 p.m.

Cut Knife (12-2) sits on top of the SPHL standings with 24 points. Shellbrook (11-4) is two points behind the Colts for second place. Maymont (10-3) and Battleford (9-3-0-2) are tied for third. Meota (7-7) is fifth, Spiritwood (6-8) is sixth and Radisson (5-8-0-1) is seventh. Glaslyn (4-9-01), Hafford (3-10-0-1) and Perdue (3-11) round out the bottom three.
