Beaver Blues, Combines get first win of SPHL season

The Meota Combines won their first SPHL game Sunday night, beating the Glaslyn North Stars 6-2 at the Civic Centre. The Combines opened the scoring in the first period on Al Howat's first goal of the season.

The Meota Combines won their first SPHL game Sunday night, beating the Glaslyn North Stars 6-2 at the Civic Centre.


The Combines opened the scoring in the first period on Al Howat's first goal of the season. Tanner Robinson beat North Stars' goaltender Cameron Simkins to give the Combines a 2-0 lead. Tristan Deronoski cut the lead in half with four minutes left in the first.


The teams traded goals in the second period. Kyle Gregoire scored for the Combines to make the score 3-1. Mathew Arsenault got the lead back to one with his goal less than a minute later.


In the third, Meota scored three unanswered to goals. Aaron Cadrin had two goals and Taylor Willsey added another.


The defending champion Battleford Beaver Blues opened their season Saturday night with 7-6 win over the Silvertips in Shellbrook.


Jordan Keller led the way for the Beaver Blues with a goal and three assists. Brent Salzl added two goals for Battleford, with Todd Heck, Mitch Phillips, Darren Poitras and Keegan Sparrow also scoring.


Mitch Wourms scored twice in a losing effort for the Silvertips. Doran Canaday, Devon Dicus, Nathanial Martin and Brett Mason added a goal each for Shellbrook.


In other SPHL action, the Radisson Wheatkings beat the Perdue Pirates 9-6 Friday night. Also on Friday, the Spiritwood Timberwolves topped the Hafford Mustangs 10-6 and the Shellbrook Silvertips defeated the Maymont Settlers 6-3.


Saturday's action saw the Pirates win 5-3 over the Timberwolves and the Cut Knife Colts had a 5-3 win at home against the Settlers.


The Colts are first in the SPHL, winning all three games played so far. They lead the league with six points.


There are seven games on the schedule this weekend. Meota hosts the Hafford Mustangs Friday night at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is 8:30 p.m. The Beaver Blues host the Perdue Pirates Saturday at 8 p.m. in their home opener at the Battleford Arena.
