A power hitter and career third baseman, Cameron (Cam) Sternig of Battleford will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Saturday, Aug. 18
Sternig grew up and played minor baseball in Battleford, with the Battleford Community Youth Club. He played junior baseball as a first baseman with the North Battleford Junior Beavers from 1963 to 1967 under coach Bob Colliar. During this period they won a championship and represented Saskatchewan at the Canadian Junior Baseball Championships in 1967.
In 1968 Sternig played third base with the North Battleford Beavers in the Northern Saskatchewan Baseball League, under coach Ken Nelson. Sternig played on the Beaver Championship teams in 1968, '69, '70, '71 and '72.
In 1969 Sternig was selected for the All-Star Team as the league's top third baseman and finished the season with a .352 batting average.
He was the top batter in 1970 with a .421 batting average and led the league in hits, total bases, doubles and home runs.
In 1974 Sternig played with the Beavers in the Canadian Senior Baseball Championships.
During Sternig's baseball career with the North Battleford Beavers he batted over .300 seven out of the eight years, ending his career with a .331 batting average and finished in the top 10 batters, winning the home-run title nine times.
In 1973, Sternig played with the Saskatoon Commodores at the Canadian Senior Championships held in Edmundston, N.B.
Sternig was a member of the 1969 North Battleford Beavers Baseball team that was previously inducted into the North Battleford Sports Hall of Fame.
Sternig, his wife Donna and children continue to make their homes in the Battlefords.
