The Humboldt Broncos showed they were an important part of the community by serving lunch at St. Dominic's School to raise money for their proposed playground.

Most of the team served a hot lunch catered by Johnnie's Bistro and over 120 students from kindergarten to Grade 8 raised a total of $563 for the playground.

"The goal was to get the Broncos involved in the school a little bit, have some excitement, bring in something a little different for the kids while raising some money for their school," said Carla Clement, the owner of Johnnie's Bistro, who catered the event.

Clement, said that she was very surprised by the extent that the Broncos participated in the fundraiser. Not only did they serve the food, but they also stuck around, played games with the kids, and signed autographs.

"I couldn't believe it," Clement said. "When I turned around and they were all scattered, sitting in classrooms, doing all this stuff, and then when they went out to the playground with them I thought, 'Are you serious? This is phenomenal!' The kids were so excited."

In addition to the hot lunch, there was a door prize where one lucky family gets to eat dinner at Johnnie's Bistro and then go to a Broncos game.

"I took pictures of them at the lunch and then put my camera away, and they just stayed and played with the kids, and the kids had such a blast," Clement said. "They were getting autographs on everything. The boys were out playing basketball, soccer. It was really good how they interacted with the kids. The community needs to know this group of Broncos is really getting involved with the community."

After the success of the fundraiser, the organizers are looking to set up something similar in other schools in Humboldt.
