It was a fast-paced game that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The Humboldt Broncos took on the Melville Millionaires on January 8 in one of five home games the Broncos hosted in the past week and a half.
Though there were only 465 people in the arena to watch them, the players didn't let that bother them. The Broncos managed to score their first goal at 2:26 of the first period. David Miazga got the point, assisted by Brandon Tidy and David Stumborg.
Melville tied things up with a power-play goal at 6:35, after the Broncos had nearly successfully killed off a four-minute double-minor to David Miazga for high sticking.
The Broncos did kill off another four-minute minor, again for high sticking, to Justin Lund at 7:29, but the Mils were able to take the lead with an even-strength point at 18:39 of the first period.
The second period passed without much of anything happening with scoring or penalties.
Later in the third, Stumborg managed to sneak past Mils goaltender Alex Wakaluk to score a tying goal at 16:22. Adam Antkowiak was credited with the assist.
With the score tied at two at the end of regulation time, the game went into overtime. Despite power plays for both teams during the five minutes, neither was able to score.
The game went into a shootout. As two of the Mils - Daniel Orsborn and Russell Trudeau - were able to score, and just one Bronco - John Lawrence - the Mils claimed a 3-2 victory over Humboldt.
The Broncos outshot the Mils 50 to 31, but failed to score at all on any of their six power plays. The Mils managed one power-play goal - their first - out of five opportunities.
Goaltender Matt Hrynkiw took the loss for Humboldt.
