The Humboldt Broncos’ dominance over the Kindersley Klippers continues after the Broncos picked up a 4-2 win over the Klippers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Kindersley.
The Dec. 12 win was the Broncos’ fifth in five tries against the Klippers this season, with the Broncos outscoring the Klippers 20-10 in those five games.
Despite holding the edge on the Klippers so far this season, Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan notes there is no rhyme or reason for it, noting a lot of the games have been pretty close.
“We might be a little in their heads now but I’m not really sure as to why. Sometimes you match up better against some teams. Last year I think they beat us five times out of six or something like that so it’s one of those things.”
The game got off to a solid start for the Broncos as Logan Hunter scored his 11th goal of the season to put the Broncos in front 1-0 after the first period.
The Broncos quickly extended their lead in the second as Xavier Labelle, and Conner Lukan scored just over four minutes apart giving the Broncos a commanding 3-0 lead.
With time winding down in the first period Tanner Thompson scored his ninth of the year, sending the game into the second intermission with the Broncos in front 3-1.
Matthieu Gomercic scored his eighth of the season at 10:34 of the third period giving the Broncos a 4-1 lead.
The Klippers added a late goal to cut the Broncos’ lead to two but they could not get any closer as the Broncos skated away with a 4-2 win.
Haugan was particularly pleased with the effort of his blue line throughout the evening, noting they had to make due with none of their three 20-year-old defensemen.
“We had four guys plus some midget call-ups so we were pleased with how well they played. In particular (Ryan) Straschnitzki. He played really well that game and really led the troops back there.”
Special teams were quiet for both teams on the evening as the Broncos finished 0-for-5 with the man advantage, while the Klippers finished the evening 1-for-3.
Jacob Wassermann picked up the win in the Broncos goal, turning aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced as the Broncos were outshot 34-32.
