Round 1 is done.
The Humboldt Broncos played Game 5 of their best-of-seven series against the Melfort Mustangs on March 15 at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt, in front of more than 750 people.
With Humboldt up 3-1 in the series, it was do-or-die for the Mustangs. However, the Broncos put an early end to the series with a 5-2 win.
Although the first period started in favour of the Mustangs, with a goal for them at the five-minute mark, it soon changed direction.
At 7:25, Dylan Fluter, assisted by John Lawrence and Cody Pettapiece, scored Humboldt's first goal on a power play. The Broncos continued, then broke the tie with a goal by Joey Davies, assisted by Alex Forsberg and Logan Sproule at 15:21, bringing the score to 2-1.
In the second period, the Broncos continued to show why they are one of the top teams in the league.
Four minutes into the second period, Carter Page scored the Broncos' third goal, assisted by Neil Landry and Rhett Blackmur, followed about four minutes later with another goal by Cody Pongracz, assisted by Forsberg and Sproule.
A fifth goal was scored by Bronco Davies at 16:03, assisted by Pongracz and Forsberg, making the score 5-1 for the Broncos at the end of the second period.
In the third period, the Mustangs came out fighting, with Mustang goalie Jesse Wilkins not letting any more pucks into his net. The Mustangs got their final goal of the night at 15:50 of the third, making the final score 5-2 for the Broncos.
Although there was only one penalty for the Mustangs in the first period and one for the Broncos in the second, tempers flared in the third.
The Mustangs received four penalties and the Broncos six in the third, including a five-minute major for Bronco David Miazga and Mustang Brandon Formosa for fighting.
The three stars of the game went to Broncos Davies, Pongracz and Fluter.
The combination of Bronco goalie Matt Hrynkiw denying goals and the Broncos outshooting the Mustangs 36-21, helped the Broncos to win the game and move on to the next series, which will be played against Flin Flon.
