Broncos win at home, lose two on the road

The Humboldt Broncos extended their win-streak to eight games with a huge win at home over the Nipawin Hawks on October 23.

The Humboldt Broncos extended their win-streak to eight games with a huge win at home over the Nipawin Hawks on October 23.This was the first matchup between the Hawks and Broncos since the exhibition season, and in the first period, the play was pretty even between the two teams. Before long, the Broncos' strength began to show. Humboldt got the first goal of the night. Logan Sproule managed to slip the puck into the Nipawin net during a Hawk power play, while sliding on the ice at 7:10 of the first. Players on both teams spent time in the penalty box during the first period, as the power plays attest. Two boarding calls, as well as one for interference were made on the Broncos, and a fight actually broke out between Bronco Adam Antkowiak and Hawk Carter Coben at 13:34, resulting in five-minute penalties for both.The Hawks evened the score with a goal of their own on another power play at 18:41 of the first. A barrage of shots on the net guarded by Matt Hrynkiw resulted in the goal. But in the second, the Broncos began to pull away from the Hawks on the scoreboard. Neil Landry got a power-play point for the Broncos at 2:03 of the second, assisted by Cody Pongracz and Sproule. Joey Davies got the Broncos' third of the night, unassisted, at 7:47, then Rhett Blackmur got Humboldt another power-play goal at 10:44, assisted by Landry and Davies. In the third, Humboldt added a fifth point at 17:01, thanks to David Miazga and Adam Zbitniff. Final score: 5-1 Broncos. The Broncos were better on the power play, going two for five, while the Hawks were one for six, but the Hawks outshot the Broncos 26 to 23 over three periods. The first star of the game was goaltender Hrynkiw, followed by winger Neil Landry and D-man Logan Sproule. Approximately 787 people attended the game at the Elgar Petersen Arena.Win streak endsThe Broncos' winning streak came screeching to a halt on their northern road trip over the weekend. The Humboldt Broncos had won eight games in a row when they faced off against the LaRonge Ice Wolves in LaRonge on October 26. But at eight it would stay. The Wolves scored first, at 13:41 of the first period, and added another before the end of the period to take a 2-0 lead. In the second, LaRonge scored three more goals on Bronco goaltender Luke Lee Knight to take it to 5-0. The Broncos finally got on the board with a goal by Logan Sproule, assisted by Stuart Symenuk at 17:47 of the second period. They got one more, this one on a power play, thanks to Cody Pongracz, assisted by Joey Davies and Kyle Lipinski. The game ended with the Wolves up 5-2.According to the shots on goal, it should have ended differently - the Broncos outshot the Wolves 64 to 39 over three periods.Penalties in the game were few and minor. The Broncos were one for three on the power play, while the Wolves were zero for three. The next night, in Flin Flon, things were worse for the Broncos. The first period was a rough one. Bronco Adam Antkowiak ended up with a 10-minute misconduct just six minutes into the game, and Broncos Joey Davies and Rhett Blackmur were also boxed for hooking and roughing. Luckily there were some Bomber penalties called at the same time, giving the Bombers just one power play.Flin Flon kicked off scoring in the second period with unanswered goals at 2:27 and 5:55.A fight broke out between Bronco Stuart Symenuk and Bomber Garrett Zelinksi at the 15:45 mark of the second. Both were given five-minute fighting majors. In the third, the Bombers added two more goals, the second an empty-netter at 18:45.The Broncos failed to score at all in the period, despite three power plays. In the end, the Bombers recorded a 4-0 win over Humboldt.The Bombers outshot the Broncos by a huge margin over three periods. The northern team levelled 52 shots at the net guarded by Humboldt's Matt Hrynkiw, while the Broncos made just 14 shots on the Bomber goal.
