They were up against the top team in the league, but managed to score a win.
The Humboldt Broncos faced the Flin Flon Bombers, one of the top teams in the country lately, on home ice at the Elgar Petersen Arena on November 28.
The first period was hard-fought, but the Broncos managed to keep the play in the Flin Flon end of the ice for most of the 20 minutes. They allowed Flin Flon only three shots on their net in the first period, and just four in the next, while the Broncos made 12 and 15 shots in the first and second respectively.
Though the Flin Flon goaltender Devin Buffalo was able to deflect or stop all 12 of the shots in the first period of play, he could only stop 13 of 15 in the second.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead over the Bombers with a goal by Dylan Fluter just 59 seconds into the second. Relatively new Bronco Christopher Manhas got the assist on that point.
Just 18 seconds later, Humboldt upped their lead to two with a point by Cody Pettapiece, assisted by Adam Zbitniff and Fluter.
The two goals went unanswered in the second period.
In the third, the Bombers finally started moving, making 15 shots on the Humboldt net, guarded by veteran Matt Hrynkiw.
Hrynkiw stopped all but one of those shots, letting the Bombers get a single point at 13:55 of the third.
After that, he shut Flin Flon's scoring down.
The game ended with the Broncos up 2-1.
Penalties throughout the game were light on the Humboldt side, but a little heavy on Flin Flon's.
The Bombers got all three penalties handed out in the first period, and two of the three in the second. In the third, there were four in total, two for each team.
All penalties were minor, but the number of them to Flin Flon helps account for their low shots on goal in the first part of the game.
In total, the Broncos outshot the Bombers 40 to 22.
Neither team was able to score on the power play. The Broncos went zero for six, while the Bombers were zero for two.
The Broncos were scheduled to play the Yorkton Terriers on Sunday, but the game was cancelled because of road conditions. Their next home game is Dec. 9 against the Melfort Mustangs.
