Broncos win over Klippers in shootout

The Humboldt Broncos added a shoot-out win to their record over the weekend, after meeting with the Kindersley Klippers on November 4 in Kindersley.

It was the Klippers who scored first on Humboldt goaltender Matt Hrynkiw at 16:36 of the first period. They then strengthened their lead with another point at 19:27 of the first, this time on the power play.
The Broncos didn't manage to get on the scoreboard until the final second of the third period, when John Lawrence scored, assisted by Matthew Backhouse and Ryan Marshall.
Humboldt tied the game with a penalty shot goal at 8:35 of the third, also scored by Lawrence.
The Broncos then pulled ahead 3-2 with a goal by Joey Davies, scored at 14:05 of the third. Backhouse and Brendan Fornwald got the assists.
The Klippers tied the game with another power play goal at 15:45 of the third, and no more scoring before the end of regulation time sent the game into a five-minute overtime period.
When the five minutes were up without another point, the game went into a shootout.
Humboldt's first shooter, Andrew Johnston, scored, as did Kindersley's first shooter, Brennan Bosovitch.
Second and third shooters Ryan Marshall and Matt Glowa for the Broncos and Troy Gedny and Taylor Duzan for the Klippers were unable to score, as was the final Klipper, Jay McGrath.
It was Lawrence who scored the winning goal of the night on Klippers' goaltender Fraser Abdallah.
Final score: 4-3 Humboldt.
The Broncos outshot the Klippers 41 to 30, but failed to score on the power play, going zero for three compared to Kindersley's two for five.
Penalties throughout the game were minimal, though Bronco Logan Sproule got a game misconduct halfway through the third, as well as two minutes for checking from behind.
Johnston and Lawrence were named the second and third stars of the game.
The Broncos then headed to North Battleford to play the second game in their western road trip against the Battlefords North Stars on November 5.
The Broncos fell 2-1 to the Stars, who led the SJHL's power rankings last week.
The Stars scored on Bronco netminder Deven Dubyk on a power play at 11:59 of the first, then added to their lead at 2:22 of the second.
The Broncos managed to score just one goal - by Andrew Johnston at 18:44 of the second. Matthew Backhouse and Andrew Herle got the assists.
The Broncos also failed to outshoot the Stars - the final tally stood at 32 to 28 for the Stars - and were zero for two on the power play, while the Stars went one for four.
The Broncos did manage to earn twice as many penalties than the Stars - Humboldt had four to the Stars' two. All were minor.
Just one Bronco made the list of game stars - Johnston was named the third star.
The Broncos now sit in fourth place in the Bauer conference with 24 points. They are also tied for fourth place in the league with Weyburn, Flin Flon and LaRonge.
The North Stars lead both the Bauer conference and the league with 31 points. The Estevan Bruins are in second with 28 points.
