TISDALE — Carrot River brothers David and Jayden Wiens are pleased to be Tisdale Trojans teammates this season.

“It’s awesome,” Jayden said. “I love playing with my older brother. It’s not every day you can say you’re playing with your brother at such a high level like midget AAA.

“He’s helping me a lot with living away from home and I’m glad I’m here with him. We’ve been teammates quite a bit back in Carrot River, where I had to go play up with him, but I haven’t played with him since atom so it’s nice to get back to it.”

Tisdale head coach Darrell Mann said the Wiens brothers come from a great family and are well liked by their teammates. They are both centremen, but have helped the Trojans have success in their own unique ways.

David is a 17-year-old in his second season with the Trojans. The veteran serves as an assistant captain this season.

“He is a real leader,” Mann said. “The players really look up to him.”

When asked about how he leads, David said:

“I feel like I do a good job of keeping everybody positive on and off the bench and lead by example.”

Part of his leadership comes from the way the 5-foot-9, 185-pound athlete plays.

“He is a gritty, hard-nosed player who plays hard on pucks,” Mann said. “He knows how to battle and compete.”

The head coach also praised David’s shot. In the first 13 games of the season, he had three goals, which were all of his points.

A former North East bantam AA and midget AA player, David suited up for the Junior B Carrot River Outback Thunder as an affiliate player last season. He is having fun in his second Trojans campaign.

“I’ve really enjoyed seeing all the guys every day and getting to know all of them,” said David, who billets with Tracy and Tyrel Frisky, who is a former Junior A and minor pro hockey player.

Jayden has also appreciated his teammates since joining the Tisdale squad.

“What I enjoy about playing for the Trojans is hanging out with the guys and spending every day with them. It’s a great group of guys and I love to be with them,” said Jayden, who billets with Gord and Kristie Mamer and their children Grady, Ethan and Logan.

A 5-foot-8, 145-pound, 15-year-old, Jayden has stepped in and produced for the Trojans as a rookie. A playmaker who sees the ice well, he has six assists and seven points in his first 13 games.

“We knew watching him play AA bantam that he’d be able to step in and be a skilled player,” Mann said.

As well, the head coach stated that the former North East bantam AA player brings a bit of edge to his game.
