The Battleford Volleyball Club Crush finished eighth in Tier 1 at the 17U women's 2014 Conexus Provincial Volleyball Championships last weekend in Saskatoon and Warman.
The Crush were edged by the Saskatoon JCVC Big Red 2-0 (26-24, 25-22) in the seventh place game. After finishing first in pool E, BVC fell to the Waldheim Raiders United in the playoffs.
Waldheim defeated the WaLa Xtreme 2-0 (25-19, 25-21) to win the Tier 1 gold medal. The Saskatoon Junior Huskies downed the Regina Junior Cougars 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) to win the bronze.
The Raiders United, who were the top seed in the tournament, went undefeated throughout the weekend. Waldheim won pool A and beat the Tisdale Kaoes and the Junior Huskies en route to the finals.
The fourth-seeded Xtreme, from the Watrous and Lanigan area, placed third in pool A. WaLa went on a run in the playoffs, taking down the Lloydminster Lakeland Rustlers, the pool C winners Big Red and the second-seeded Junior Cougars.
The Edam North West Fury earned a fourth place finish in the 17U men's provincial tournament.
After going 3-3 in pool play, the Fury dropped a three-set game 2-1 (19-25, 25-18, 15-13) to the Regina Volleyball Club Gold in the bronze medal game.
The Prince Albert North Sask Volleyball Club, who were the top-ranked team in the province heading into the tournament, beat the Saskatoon Junior Huskies 2-0 (25-21, 27-25) to claim the provincial gold medal. It was a rematch of the 17U Subway Sask Cup No. 2, in which Prince Albert also defeated Saskatoon.
In other provincial action, the Saskatoon Total Chaos won the 18U women's Tier 1 gold medal. In a battle of Saskatoon teams, the Total Chaos dropped the Junior Huskies 2-0 (25-17, 25-15) in the gold medal match. It was the fourth straight provincial title for the Total Chaos group, following wins in the 15U, 16U and 17U tournaments from 2011-2013. The Total Chaos were the top seed heading into this year's tournament.
The Regina Volleyball Club Gold won 2-0 (25-20, 25-13) over the Regina QCVC Royal in the Tier 1 bronze medal game.
In the men's 18U tournament, the Prince Albert Volleyball Club Smashing Bananas came back from an early deficit to win the gold medal. The Smashing Bananas beat the Estevan South East Giants 2-1 (24-26, 25-19, 15-13).
After the Giants downed the Smashing Bananas in the page playoffs, Prince Albert took out the Lloydminster VC Cannons in the quarter-final and the Swift Current Junior Sundogs in the semifinal.
The Saskatoon Junior Huskies earned the bronze medal with a 2-1 (17-25, 25-13, 15-11) win against the Sundogs.
The next action for these groups is the Canadian Open May 9-11 in Edmonton, Alta.
