Humboldt’s finest gymnasts were tumbling, flipping, rolling, and jumping with some of Saskatchewan’s best at their home competition.
The Feb. 3 meet featured 107 gymnasts from seven different clubs up from the six clubs, and just over 90 gymnasts at their first meet one year ago.
Calico Gymnastics president Angela Bley says she is really pleased to see the size of the competition grow.
The competition also marked the first of the year for Calico’s gymnasts, which is important, notes Bley.
“That’s especially good for our youngest athletes, our JO 1’s and 2’s. This being for some of them, their very first competition ever so they’re more comfortable at home.”
With the competition being Calico’s first of the year, the gymnasts wasted little time getting to work as they picked up two silvers and a bronze in the all around competition.
Calico also added four fourths, and two fifths to their all around finishes.
Overall, Bley was pleased with how the event was able to go.
“Everything flowed really nice so everything was on time. It’s still a learning experience for us as this is only our second year holding a competition but I feel like everything ran very smoothly.”
A large part of making the event run smooth are the volunteers, and Bley says she is so thankful to all of them for their help, noting work began in October to prepare.
“That means everything. If we wouldn’t have all these volunteers coming out to help us, support everything we wouldn’t be able to put this kind of event on.”
Bley would also like to thank their session and medal sponsors who helped make the competition a success.
“Its so nice to have the support of local businesses. I know they must get hit up for donations all the time so I’d like to let them know it is greatly appreciated,” noted Bley in an email to the Humboldt Journal.
Calico also received a boost from their neighbour, Dave Wuchner, who plowed a large parking area for the competition.
“Thanks to Dave for going the extra mile and plowing out a huge parking area for us,” noted Bley.
After a successful first competition of the season, Calico will look to put some additional work in before returning to action on Feb. 11 for the Marian Invitational.
