Call for coaches

Without the contributions of volunteer coaches organized sports would not exists in any community including the Battlefords.

Without the contributions of volunteer coaches organized sports would not exists in any community including the Battlefords. Fortunately there are dozens of those people who step forward to allow local athletes the chance to play their favourite sports. Too often coach positions can be a thankless job and the countless hours are overlooked, but the Battlefords News-Optimist and Regional Optimist are now giving one of those coaches in the community their due credit.

In conjunction with Coaches Week in Saskatchewan, May 22 to 29, the local newspapers will be printing one story of a deserving coach and submitting that story to the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan. The association will select a winner and $1,000 will be awarded for the winning story. Half of the prize money will go to the local minor sports organization of the coach's choice while the other half is awarded to the winning newspaper.

The News-Optimist sports department is asking for the publics' help. Send your submission of the coach you think is most deserving by e-mail to Trent at newsoptimist.sports@sasktel.net or fax at 445-3223.

Include in the nomination the coach's history with that organization or organizations, why the coach deserves the honour, championships and awards won as the coach and contact information for the nominator and nominee. All nominees must coach amateur teams or athletes in the community and not be paid full time professionals.

All nominees will be printed in the newspaper during Coaches Week. Please submit your nominees by May 13.
