After a tough loss on Feb. 3, the Humboldt Broncos had some fun at their annual players shootout.
After the Humboldt Broncos home game, the team hosted a player auction where fans were encouraged to bid on the Broncos player or coach they felt was going to do the best in their shootout the next night. The goalies were also bid on for save percentage so there were three percentages up for grabs, 0-.750, .751-.850 and .851-1.000 for each of them based on the number of shots they keep out of the net.
The Broncos were able to raise roughly $15,450 at their auction, which is approximately $2,500 less than they raised at this event last year.
Logan Boulet took home the honor as highest bid as he went for $900, followed by Connor Swystun and Chris Van Os-Shaw at $800.
Broncos President Jamie Brockman was really pleased with the support the community showed.
“It’s huge. Without the community we don’t have a hockey team so to have them support us like that is tremendous.”
The Broncos then pay out a total of 50 per cent of the proceeds. The first place winner wins 15 per cent for their bidder, second place is worth 10 per cent, third place is worth 5 per cent and each of the two goalies correct save percentage is worth an additional 10 per cent.
The shootout occurred after the Broncos game on Feb. 4 against Battlefords.
Each player was given two shots, one against each goalie and was required to score one goal to avoid being eliminated. If the player scored they moved onto the next round and the players and coaches kept shooting until only a first second and third place finished.
The winner of the event was head coach Darcy Haugan, second place went to assistant coach Brayden Klimosko and third prize went to SJHL leading goal scorer Chris Van Os-Shaw.
The win marked the second straight year Haugan took home top honours and was the third consecutive year a coach was the winner after Klimosko took home top honours in 2015, while both winning goalie percentages were in the 0-.750 category.
The atmosphere inside the Elgar Petersen Arena was great during the shootout as many of the 1,100 fans who took in the game stayed to watch the players put on a show.
The shootout is a fundraiser for the club with the proceeds from the shootout helping to cover costs accumulated throughout the season.
Brockman said he would really like to thank the community for their support this year.
