Last weekend was a busy one in the SPHL with seven games taking place between Jan. 10 and 12.
There were two games Friday night. The Cut Knife Colts beat the Mustangs 10-6 in Hafford. The Colts were led by Kirk MacDonald's hat trick. The Maymont Settlers defended home ice with a 7-2 win over the Spiritwood Timberwolves. Tyler Hubbard and Stacey Wandler each had two goals in the Settlers' win.
Four games faced off Saturday night. The Timberwolves needed overtime to beat the Battleford Beaver Blues 6-5 at home in overtime. Colton Poulin scored twice for Spiritwood. In Perdue, the Pirates fell 7-5 to the Shellbrook Silvertips. Shellbrook's Kyle Brataschuk and Devin Waterhouse both found the back of the net twice in the win. The Colts scored 10 goals again, this time in a 10-2 win at home over the Glaslyn North Stars. MacDonald supplied the offence again, registering four goals and two assists. The Wheatkings defeated the Mustangs 9-5 in Radisson. Jamie Wuttunee scored a hat trick for the Wheatkings in the win.
Sunday night's lone game saw the Wheatkings travel to North Battleford to beat the Meota Combines 5-2. Dustin Bezugly's hat trick led the way for Radisson.
Games are starting to pick up during the week as well. Meota travelled to Hafford and beat the Mustangs 8-4.
Cut Knife (11-2) remains in first place after the week's action. Maymont (9-3) and Shellbrook (9-4) are tied for second in the league with 18 points. Battleford sits alone in fourth place in the league. Meota (7-6) is close behind in fifth place. Radisson is in sixth, followed by Spiritwood (5-7), Glaslyn (4-7) and Hafford (3-9). Perdue (2-11) is still in the basement of the SPHL.
There are seven games in the league this weekend, three of which are Friday night. The Timberwolves host Meota in Spiritwood and Cut Knife faces off against the Settlers in Maymont. Both games start at 8 p.m. The third Friday night tilt sees Shellbrook try to defend home ice against the visiting Glaslyn North Stars. Puck drop is 8:30 p.m.
Saturday night's action sees Spiritwood welcome Shellbrook into town, the Beaver Blues and the Maymont Settlers squaring off in Battleford, Radisson heading to Cut Knife to take on the Colts and Perdue visits Glaslyn. All of Saturday's games begin at 8 p.m.
