The Meota Combines extended their winning streak to four games Saturday night as they beat the Shellbrook Silvertips 5-3 at the Civic Centre. Taylor Willsey led the way for the Combines with a goal and two assists in the game.
Willsey opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period. He beat Silvertips goaltender Jory Segberg with assists to Brett Miller and Marc Migneault. The Silvertips tied the game shortly after when Kyle Brataschuk scored on Combines goalie Carson Churchman. Sean Leniuk broke the tie with 8:47 left in the first from Daxen Collins and Willsey. The Combines extended their lead to two with less than two minutes left in the first. Dayne Iverson put the puck past Segberg to give Meota a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Shellbrook cut the lead to one midway through the second period. Devon Thorpe scored on the power play for the Silvertips with Combines forward Aaron Cadrin in the box for interference at 11:39.
In the third, Meota regained their two-goal lead when Miller beat Segberg with eight minutes left in the game. Sean Kenny sealed the game with a goal with 1:41 left to make it 5-2. Silvertips forward Derek Olson scored with 30 seconds left, but Shellbrook did not come any closer.
Churchman has yet to lose a game in his three starts for the Combines, with a goals-against average of 3.00. Segberg has lost three of his four starts for Shellbrook.
The Silvertips earned a win on the weekend as well, beating the Hafford Mustangs 7-0 Friday. Jason McComas scored four times in the win. Brataschuk, Thorpe, and Nick Martin also found the back of the net for Shellbrook.
In other SPHL action over the weekend, the Cut Knife Colts throttled the Spiritwood Timberwolves 13-0 Friday night. Frank Gino had a hat trick. Kenton Albert, Riley Albert, Ryan Constant and Ashton Hewston each registered a pair of goals. Jason Lloyd and Kirk MacDonald also added a goal each.
Saturday night saw two wild games take place. In Radisson, the Wheat Kings dropped a close one 9-8 to the Maymont Settlers. Taylor Fauchoux scored twice in the win for the Settlers. Kolton Baptiste, Ryan Baptiste, Myles Baptiste, Chad Bernier, Tyler Hubbard, Scott Lange and Michael Pylypow were goal scorers for Maymont.
The Wheat Kings were led by Dana Derbowka's two goals. Brian Clarke, Jared Knorr, Jonathon McIntosh, Vince Sauvie, Brad Wanner and Jamie Wuttunee scored in a losing effort for Radisson.
The other wild game saw the Hafford Mustangs win 8-7 at home over the Perdue Pirates. Andrew Kitchen registered a hat trick for the Mustangs. Kyle Rivett scored twice and Andrew Galambos, Mike Henschel and Jamie Smith each scored once.
Chris Ewan led the way for the Pirates with a hat trick of his own. Clark McNulty added two goals, while Keaton Silvernagle and Doug Weber also added single goals.
Despite Cut Knife (5-1) losing last week to Meota, they are still first in the SPHL with 10 points. Shellbrook (4-3) and Meota (4-1) are tied for second place with eight points each.
Maymont (3-2) and Battleford (3-0) are tied with six points each, good for fourth in the league. Spiritwood (2-4) and Radisson (2-1) have four points. Glaslyn (1-3-0-1) has three points. Perdue (1-6) and Hafford (1-4) are tied for last in the league with two points each.
