Eagles end Outlaws' winning streak before playoffs

The St. Walburg Eagles ended the Wilkie Outlaws' 11 game winning streak Saturday night with an 8-7 victory in NSRHL action. The Eagles were down 6-4 after the second, before scoring four times in the third.

The Eagles were down 6-4 after the second, before scoring four times in the third. Nick Wourms had a hat trick in the Eagles' win. Brady Zerr and Kevin Nasby each scored twice. Curtis Zerr had the other St. Walburg goal. Wilkie was led by Barrett Penner's two goals. Rick Cey, Andrew Herle, Aaron Lorenz, Brett Schell and Mike Sittler all found the back of the net for the Outlaws.

Meadow Lake had a successful final regular season weekend. The Stampeders won both of their games, starting with an 11-1 rout of the Edam 3 Stars Friday night. Meadow Lake scored eight times in the final frame.

Jamie Jeanotte led the way with a hat trick for Meadow Lake. Jorden Iron added two goals and three assists in the win. Calvin Fiddler scored once and had five assists. The Stampeders also received goals from Chad Crookedneck, Dustin Gorst, Logan Gorst, DJ King and Lee Ludwig all added a goal for Meadow Lake. Ryan Roach had the lone goal for Edam.

The Stampeders defeated the Maidstone Jets 6-1 Saturday night to finish the season on a six game winning streak. Jeanotte had a two goals an assist to lead the offence for Meadow Lake. Quaid Tournier also scored twice for the Stampeders. King and Ashton McIntyre added goals for Meadow Lake. Rory Gregoire scored Maidstone's only goal.

Gregoire dominated in Maidstone's 7-6 overtime win over the Turtleford Tigers. He had a part in every goal for the Jets, registering five goals and two assists. Troy Johnston scored once and added four assists. Ben Schwartz also lit the lamp for Maidstone. Garret Macnab and Adam Schwark both had two goals and two assists. Zack Macnab also had a goal and four assists. Adam Gray was the Tigers' other goal scorer.

The final regular season standings in the NSRHL saw Wilkie (18-2) finish on top. St. Walburg (14-3-3) finished the season in second place. Both teams have the option to take a bye or play in the first round of the playoffs. Wilkie has decided to take the bye. St. Walburg chose to play in the first round.

With the two wins on the weekend, Meadow Lake (11-8-1) jumped into third place in the league. The Stampeders opted to take the other first round bye.

Edam (10-9-1), Maidstone (4-15-1) and Turtleford (3-14-3) finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The first round of the playoffs are best-of-three series. Edam hosts Maidstone and St. Walburg plays Turtleford. Both series started Wednesday night.
