Three teams have already played a third of their regular season games, as the league wrapped up its fourth week and one of those, the St. Walburg Eagles, are pulling ahead of the rest of the teams in the North Saskatchewan River Hockey League standings.
St. Walburg played twice on the weekend and earned two wins, both by six goals. Friday, the Eagles hosted Maidstone. Once again the players expected to be the Eagles' top players were their top players, as Trevor Bailey had two goals and an assist and Trent Campbell had two goals and two assists. Sheldon Williamson and Taylor Thiessen also had two points for St. Walburg while Curtis Zerr and Randy Larre scored a goal each.
Bryan Bridges was beat just once, as Kevin Rhinehart scored in the second period for Maidstone.
The next night, St. Walburg went into Wilkie and Bridges was strong again making many of his saves look easy. Bridges and the Eagles earned the 6-0 win.
St. Walburg scored some highlight reel goals and Campbell factored in on five of the Eagles' goals. Williamson and Bailey both had three points in the win as well.
The Eagles' top three players sit first, second and third in the league in points, as Bailey has 27, Campbell has 25 and Jordan Fuder, who didn't play on the weekend and has suited up for just three games, has recorded 21 points.
Bridges leads the league in goals-against average with a 1.62 mark.
In a rematch of last season's NSRHL final, Maidstone travelled to Meadow Lake. The Stampeders were able to hold off the Jets, who had a short bench.
Meadow Lake won 5-3 with Ryan Corrigal leading the way with two goals and an assist. Calvin Fiddler, Jorden Iron and Ahston McIntyre all scored for Meadow Lake while Jeff Vidal helped the team earn their second win and improve to 2-1-0.
Rory Gregoire scored his first goal of the season for the Jets while Jamie Johnston and Brett Harrison also found the back of the net.
Maidstone is the only winless team in the league with a 0-5-0 record.
The other Saturday night game featured the Turtleford Tigers at home to Paradise Hill. Kyle Dodgson scored three times and had two assists to help the Tigers to an 8-2 win. Kris Bloom scored twice and Darren Delainey, Brett Medve and Adam Schwark scored once. The Tigers offence exploded with six goals in the second period, as they have also reached the 1/3 point of the season with six games played.
Michael Babchuk was the losing goalie while Aaron Gervais and Derek Jeanotte scored for Paradise Hill.
Paradise Hill also lost Friday to Meadow Lake. That game ended 7-3 for the Stampeders. Meadow Lake jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first period. Corrigal had a hat trick, Iron had two and DJ King and McIntyre scored once.
