The late Walter "Gus" Kyle of Dysart will be inducted posthumously, into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame Aug. 18 along with other derserving individuals players, builders a team, family and community.
Kyle was born Sept. 11, 1921 and his baseball and athletic career began at an early age. His chisel shaped physique was soon recognized by a sports icon in this province, Father Athol Murray of Notre Dame College.
Baseball along with hockey, was nearly a 365 day a year activity in Wilcox. Because Kyle was such a well put together athlete, he was the backbone of any ball team, and was the catcher.
After serving a short time with the RCMP and after his NHL career, Kyle moved back to Regina and started a business with his brother Bill. The business was called Kyle Brothers Sporting goods which was well known throughout southern Saskatchewan.
He began playing ball with the RCMP in the South Saskatchewan League. His offensive skill was second to none with batting averages from .400 to .550
In 1952, Kyle batted an incredible .552 with the Regina Caps. The Caps ball team was always contenders with him on the team slugging home run after home run. As a catcher, he was well known for his ability to call a game and knowing the opposing hitters. He made the game easy for his pitchers.
His hockey skills also blossomed at Notre Dame and he was fortunate enough to play NHL hockey with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins from 1949 to 1952.
After his ball career, for 16 years he was hockey broadcaster with the famed Dan Kelly.
Kyle passed away in 1996 and is a well-deserving inductee in the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
