1932 - United States bobsled team member Eddie Eagan becomes the first athlete to win gold in both the Summer and Winter Olympics Games. He was gold in boxing in 1920.
1990 - Major League Baseball's owner lock out players. The work stoppage lasted 32 days erasing all of spring training.

1972 - Wilt Chamberlain becomes the first National Basketball Association player to score 30,000 career points. He reached the feat in 940 games.
2005 - National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman cancels the 2004-05 season. It was the first time in North America a major professional league cancelled an entire season.

1941 - Heavyweight boxer Joe Louis knocks outs Gus Dorazio in the second round to earn the title.
2013 - Former Battlefords North Stars captain and defenceman Travis Sparrow turns 22.
February 18
1936 - An NHL record of 32 goals were scored between the Montreal Maroons and New York Americans. The Americans won 28-24.
1944 - Joe Nuxhall, a 15-year-old pitcher signs a contract with the Cincinnati Reds as the youngest player to sign a contract in MLB history. Nuxhall made his debut in June of that year.
1967 - Eddie Feigner pitched in a celebrity charity softball game and struck out major leaguers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Maury Wills and Harmon Killebrew all in a row.
February 19
1984 - On the final day of the 14th Winter Olympic Games, twin brothers Steve and Phil Mahre win gold and silver in the giant slalom event. They become the first brother combo to win the same event.
2013 - Battlefords Midget Stars rookie defenceman Corbin Schmidt of Saskatoon turns 17.
February 20
1971 - NHLer Phil Esposito becomes the fastest player to score 50 goals in a season as a member of the Boston Bruins. He finished the year with 76 goals in 78 games.
1974 - After a year of retirement from professional hockey Gordie Howe signs a contract with the Houston Aeros of the WHA and plays along side his sons Mark and Marty.
1993 - Florida Marlins open their first spring training camp. The Marlins first MLB win comes April 5 against the Dodgers.

1973 - The Chicago Blackhawks set an NHL record 262 games without being shutout.
1989 - Cincinnati Reds great Pete Rose meets with outgoing MLB commissioner Peter Ueberroth and his replacement Bart Giamatti to discuss his gambling.
