He may not be from the Battlefords, but Jordie Johnston is someone the Battlefords hockey community can be proud of.

Johnston played midget AAA with the Stars before moving up to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the La Ronge Ice Wolves. In three seasons Johnston had 90 goals and 107 assists with the Ice Wolves.

After his junior career, he moved on to Ferris State University and played four seasons with the Bulldogs. Last weekend, Johnston and the Bulldogs played in the NCAA championship game against favoured Boston College. The Bulldogs lost in the national championship game, but days later Johnston's hockey career was extended.

Wednesday, it was announced he signed an amateur tryout contract with the American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The Sound Tigers are the affiliates of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.

Johnston, a product of Rosetown, was an All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association second team honouree and the Bulldogs' top scorer this season.

Bridgeport plays Wilkes-Barre/Scranton three times this weekend to finish off the regular season and is posed for a long playoff run, as they were first in their division heading into the final weekend of action.
