After round robin play at the Allan Cup in Lloydminster, the host Border Kings are on their way through to the semifinals.
The Border Kings beat Kenora 7-4 Monday and Stony Plain 3-2 Tuesday to earn one of two byes to the semifinals. Former North Star Travis Clayton notched two assists in Lloydminster's two games. Defenceman Brody Malek, another former Battlefords North Star, has played in both games as well earning four penalty minutes. Goaltender Jody Lehman of the Battlefords has also suited up, but hasn't played for the Border Kings in their first two games.
The other Saskatchewan representative, the Rosetown Red Wings, who beat Lloydminster and Balgonie in provincials, went 1-1 in their first two games of the Allan Cup. Rosetown lost 2-1 Monday to South East and won 4-3 in overtime Wednesday against Grand Falls-Windsor. Boyd Kampen, a member of the last Battlefords North Stars team to win the SJHL championship, has played one game with Rosetown in the Allan Cup.
Rosetown were in action against Kenora in quarter-final play Thursday at 4 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 4 and 8 p.m. Lloydminster will play the late game while South East has earned a bye to the other semifinal.
The final will be played Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and broadcast on tape delay on TSN2.
Lloydminster has won the Allan Cup twice before (2007 and 2001) and are just one of three franchises from Saskatchewan to win the 103-year-old championship. The other Saskatchewan winners were the Regina Victorias in 1914 and the Regina Rangers in 1941.
This is the first season Rosetown has competed for the Allan Cup.
