Four provincial championships bring volleyball season to an exciting end

Two schools knew they would be playing in provincials as host teams while other from the area had to earn their way they and proved they deserved to be there.

At the 2A boys' level, Paradise Hill and Edam were in the same pool and finished first and second heading into the playoffs. They would eventually meet again later in the weekend.

Paradise Hill won in straight sets over Edam, Kahkewistahaw and Langham while Central Butte took them to three sets during the round robin.

Edam needed three sets to beat Langham and Kahkewistahaw and just two sets to beat Central Butte.

In the playoffs held in Carlyle and Arcola, Edam won in the quarter-finals over Montmartre while Paradise Hill ended Goodsoil's season.

Both teams made quick, easy work in the semifinals with Edam beating Central Butte and Paradise Hill defeating Mossbank.

The two Northwest area teams were set to face off in championship game. In two close sets, and the teams trading point-for-point the entire game, Paradise Hill won 25-23 and 25-22 to earn the gold medals.

Medstead and Spiritwood co-hosted the 1A boys provicial championship on the weekend and the host team made an impression.

Medstead beat Nakoda Oyade, Glaslyn and Rouleau Friday in the round robin play. They lost to Fox Valley who went through the round robin perfect. Glaslyn failed to advance to the playoffs after going 0-4 in round robin.

In the other pool, Bordon's only win in the round robin came against Bellevue and they lost in three sets to Avonlea, Annaheim and two sets to Kincaid.

Borden was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Fox Valley, who went on to win the provincial title.

Medstead won their quarter-final game over Avonlea, but lost in the semifinal to Annaheim, both games were finished in two sets.

In the bronze medal game, Kincaid/College Mathieu won 16-25, 25-15, 25-20 over Medstead to earn the final medal.

Maidstone and Lashburn were the host schools for the 3A boys championship, which saw Maidstone and Wilkie inserted into the same pool.

Wilkie beat Carrot River, Maidstone, Moose Jaw Fiver and lost in three sets to Saskatoon Christian while Maidstone went undefeated and failed to make the playoffs after the round robin.

In the quarter-final Wilkie was in a battle with Rosthern Junior College. RJC won the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-23, after Wilkie had the edge mid-way through the second set.

The other provincial tournament on the weekend was in Nipawin for 4A boys teams. Nipawin went on to win gold in three sets over Oxbow.
