The Town of Battleford will be looking into getting some more visibility for its attractions, starting with the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, through highway signs like those seen in other communities.
A man from Lloydminster, where highway signage alerts travelers of attractions such as the Barr Colony Museum, the Bud Miller All Seasons Park and even the border, feels these kinds of signs would benefit the Baseball Hall of Fame, of which he is a selection committee director.
Leo Wurtz sent a letter to mayor and council of Battleford, which was received May 6, asking them to make a request to the Ministry of Highways for signage advertising the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
Council agreed it was a good idea, and that they should also consider signage for other attractions such as the Fred Light Museum and Fort Battleford.
Wurtz said in his letter he had made a visit to Battleford recently to meet with Jane Shury the director for the Baseball Hall of Fame, and noticed a lack of signage.
"During the course of our discussions I mentioned that there is no highway signage, to my knowledge, entering Battleford or North Battleford informing the public, tourists and baseball enthusiasts of this significant location of Saskatchewan baseball history together with the benefits that would be realized by the Town of Battleford," wrote Wurt.
Shury asked him if he would be interested in pursuing the matter further, so he first contacted his MLA for Lloydminster, only because he knew him personally, to see whether such a request was worthy of consideration. Tim McMillan was supportive of the idea, Wurtz wrote, and directed him to contact the Battlefords MLA, Herb Cox. From that office he found out the type of request he wished to make to the ministry needed to be made through local government.
Town administration will be checking into the possibilities.
