It was a good way to end the soccer season.
The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) senior girls' soccer team ended its season on a positive note when they defeated Lake Lenore in the Horizon Central Athletic Association (HCAA) league championship on October 25 at Humboldt.
After a disappointing loss at Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association 2A Regionals against the Yorkton Saints on October 22, the HCI Mohawks rebounded with a 2-0 victory over the Lancers.
"It was a very close game," said Mohawks coach Brent Loehr. "It was 0-0 at the half, and then the girls came on strong during the second half and got two goals."
With only two months playing time in the short soccer season, Loehr reports the team made good headway this year, placing first in the HCAA league division for 2011.
When soccer season rolls around again next year, there will be a slightly different configuration to the HCI Mohawks soccer team.
"We're losing four players who will be graduating this year," Loehr said. "They are very strong players, but we still have a strong core returning next year, and hopefully we can get some Grade 9s."
Loehr said the team has three or four players from every grade, from Grades 9 through 12.
Results for the four teams in the HCAA were as follows:
1. HCI Mohawks (17 points); 2. Lake Lenore Lancers (16 points); 3. Middle Lake Avengers (8 points); Muenster Cougars (7 points).
