Notes from the past two weeks in high school sports:
The HCI boys soccer team fell to Muenster by a score of 1-0 on Oct. 2 but returned the favour a week later when they defeated Muenster by the same score of 1-0 in the Horizon school division championship game.
The girls soccer team is heading into their last regular season game against St. Brieux on Oct. 10 with a sterling record of 7-0. The team has already qualified for the league final, held yesterday at Glenn Hall Park. Coach Kaitlin Prokosch said the team's familiarity with each other has been a major factor in their success. "The team is kind of like a family, they all get along really well," Prokosch said. The league's move to a seven-on-seven format has also helped (HCI played the standard 11-on-11 last year). "The girls seem to play better seven-on-seven," Prokosch said. "They know each other well and how everyone plays."
The junior football team took on squads from Delisle and Clavet on Oct. 2 at Glenn Hall Park. The junior squads are designed to give players a chance to get some game action in and improve their skills. "The idea is to get our young guys to play as much football as we can," said coach Cory Popoff. Players from the HCI senior football team helped out by coaching their younger counterparts. Later, both teams practiced under the temporary lights that were installed at the park for the senior team's game on Oct. 3 against Melfort.
