Five Humboldt and area high school curling teams travelled to Strasbourg Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 for the Horizon School Division's District Championships.
Six teams, of which two were local, competed in the mixed competition.
The Quill Lake foursome of skip Chase Martin, third Michelle Marshall, second Keyon Nieth (substituting for Brandon Wray) and lead Taralyn Korolchuk dropped their first game to the host Strasbourg team. This opening draw loss put them into the B side of the draw.
Also in the opening draw of the mixed competition was the LeRoy team of skip Austin Harms, third Haley Buhs, second Justin Serrano and lead Stephanie Schoettler. They came out on the short side of the score against their first competitors from Ituna. Ituna went on to win the A side and become district champions, punching their ticket to regionals in Estevan this weekend.
On the B side, Quill Lake met Kelvington who had been dropped to the consolation pool by Ituna. Unfortunately for the Quill Lake foursome, they made an early departure from the playoffs when Kelvington handed them their second loss on the day.
The second B-side matchup featured LeRoy and Cudworth, who lost to Strasbourg on the A side.
Cudworth recorded the victory handing LeRoy its second loss, ending their run for a berth at regionals.
Strasbourg who lost the A final to Ituna, won the B side and will be the second mixed representative in Estevan from the Horizon School Division.
In the girls' draw, teams from Humboldt, LeRoy, Ituna, Kelvington, Strasbourg and Wakaw were chasing the two spots available at regionals.
The Humboldt rink of skip Chantelle Bowman, third Melanie Gregor-Payne, second Danielle Guina and alternating leads Brooklyn and Alysssa Hofmann won their opening game versus Ituna putting them into the A semifinal against Wakaw, who had a first-round bye.
The LeRoy rink of skip Kristen Lissel, third Martina Moore, second Taylor Block and lead Cassidy Oesch dropped their opening game to Kelvington who met and defeated Strasbourg in the A semifinal while LeRoy dropped to the B side and faced the familiar faces of the Humboldt girls' team.
Humboldt lost the A semifinal against Wakaw to drop into B-side action, making for the team's third consecutive game of the championships.
LeRoy emerged victorious to advance to the B semifinal against Ituna Saturday morning.
The Ituna foursome prevailed advancing to the B final against Kelvington who lost in the A final against Wakaw. Kelvington defeated Ituna to claim the B side and advance along with district champs Wakaw to Estevan.
In the hunt for the boys' district title were teams from Strasbourg, Humboldt, Foam Lake, Wadena and two teams from Wakaw.
The Humboldt foursome of skip Matt Sokolan, third William Eichorst, second Dylan Bowman and lead Jeremy Earis registered back-to-back victories over Strasbourg and Wakaw One to claim a spot in the A final where they met Foam Lake who defeated Wakaw Two and Wadena en route to the final.
Foam Lake won the A-side final but Humboldt still had the opportunity to qualify by winning the B-side final.
Humboldt faced Wadena who were dropped to the B side by Foam Lake but then met and defeated Strasbourg and Wakaw One on their way to the B final.
It just wasn't to be this year for Humboldt as Wadena won the Saturday morning matchup, joining Foam Lake in Estevan at Regionals this weekend.
