A province's pride, history and future will be on display across Saskatchewan, as hockey communities everywhere celebrate SaskEnergy Hockey Day in Saskatchewan.

The fifth annual event will be hosted in Melville but all other communities province wide have been encouraged to partake in the Hockey Day in Saskatchewan events.

SaskEnergy Hockey Day in Saskatchewan is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the game of hockey throughout the province while also serving as a way to strengthen community spirit at the local arenas.

The idea is Saskatchewan communities can thrive by making the local arena the main hub of activity. In the previous four years of the event, the host communities have combined for $250,000 raised for local rink projects and improvements.

One of the criteria for the selection of the provincial host is that there must be an arena renovation or building project in the plans. The City of Melville is currently raising funds for the final phase of its new Melville Communiplex. The Communiplex was set to open in time for the 2011-12 season.

Melville will feature a supper banquet and auction with guest speaker Bryan Trottier along with 18 hockey games throughout the weekend, a cabaret, multidenominational church service and pancake breakfast.

Along with the activites and excitement at the arenas across the province local organizations are encouraged to issue SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Awards.

The Battlefords have presented Barry Belak, Bob Kenny and Lloyd Edmonds with the award in the past and plan to present another Volunteer Champion Award this weekend during the novice tournament.
