Homegrown talent on Sirens' roster

There has been no shortage of critics of the new Lingerie Football League speaking against the idea, which started up in Saskatoon and Regina this season. But until those critics actually watch a game it is just that - words without reason.

There has been no shortage of critics of the new Lingerie Football League speaking against the idea, which started up in Saskatoon and Regina this season. But until those critics actually watch a game it is just that - words without reason.

The Saskatoon Sirens played their first-ever game on the weekend in the Credit Union Centre against the B.C. Angels and won.

By no means was it a sold out crowd, but there was some excitement throughout the game and the pre-game entertainment.

The Sirens won the game 22-18 with their 15-women roster playing seven-on-seven.

The shortened football field featured some nice catches and aggressive hits on the weekend, just as expected in a football game. It was reported that the Sirens mainly used their import players from the United States in the game, but two familiar names to those in the Battlefords were listed on the Sirens' roster.

Trista Stokalko a 24-year-old from North Battleford, is listed as a wide receiver for the team.

"When I heard about there being a team in Saskatoon I figured why not try out," explains Stokalko. "The worst outcome would be that I wouldn't make the team. I've always stayed in relatively good shape, and have been considering for some time to join a sports team, so I went for a try out."

The other is Sara Mead, who is from Salmon Arm, B.C., but lived in the Battlefords. The 21-year-old is a wide receiver and defensive back with the Sirens.

Stokalko explains the new league as fantastic and says, "It gives women an opportunity to get in shape and play a sport they love."

The Sirens' next game will be in Sept. 15 in Toronto with their second and final home game of the regular season Oct. 6.
