Humboldt athletes collect 15 medals at Summer Games

After six days of competition the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games have come to an end. The games ran from Jul. 24 to Jul. 30 in Estevan with athletes from across the province competing in 13 different sports.

After six days of competition the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games have come to an end.

The games ran from Jul. 24 to Jul. 30 in Estevan with athletes from across the province competing in 13 different sports.

Team Prairie Central sent 24 Humboldt athletes to the games to compete in a number of events including athletics, baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, softball, and swimming.

Overall the 24 athletes enjoyed a solid week at the games with the athletes bringing home 15 medals, including five gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals.

Sam Fisher lead the medal haul for Humboldt athletes as she picked up four gold medals, winning the Special Olympics 50m freestyle event with a time of 46.40, the 100m freestyle competition with a time of 1:48.57, the 50m backstroke race with a time of 51.33, and the 100m backstroke competition finishing with a time of 1:58.65.

Jessica Ehr collected a pair of medals of her own as she won silver in the Special Olympics 50m freestyle competition with a time of 57.24, and a bronze medal in the 100m race with a time of 2:24.76.

Jessica and Fisher teamed up with Jay Eichorst and Garrett Brown to capture the silver medal in the 4x50m freestyle integrated relay race with a combined time of 2:50.96.

Jocelyn Ehr joined teammates Jessica and Fisher on the podium in the Special Olympics 50m freestyle event as she claimed bronze with a time of 1:00.07.

Athlete Taylor Zwarych also enjoyed a successful meet as she won a pair of individual bronze medals finishing third in the girls 100m race with a time of 12.93, and third in the 200m competition with a finishing time of 26.12.

The girls 4x100m relay team also enjoyed some success as Zwarych teamed up with three other Prairie Central runners to collect the silver medal with a time of 51.04, her third of the games.

Another Humboldt athlete to collect a pair of medals was Tayden Wallin who won gold in the boys golf competition finishing with a two day score of 128 points in the stableford formatted event.

Thanks to his high score Wallin helped Prairie Central capture the boys golf  team bronze medal with a final score of 226 points.

Tia Zimmerman collected a bronze medal of her own in the Special Olympics 100m backstroke event as she finished with a time of 3:41.65.

Rounding out the medal winners was Ryan Hinz who also captured a bronze medal as he finished third in the 50m-breaststroke competition with a finishing time of 38.39.

The success of the Humboldt athletes contributed to Team Prairie Central finishing third in the total medal standings with 52 medals, just one shy of Team South East for third.
