U16 Hurricanes capture Silver at Hollandia Cup

The Humboldt U16 Hurricanes captured the silver medal at the Hollandia Cup tournament in Saskatoon May 27-29.

The Hurricanes opened their tournament on May 27 with a matchup against Queen City United from Regina. The Hurricanes played solid team defense throughout the entire game as they shut out the United by a score of 4-0.

They returned to action the following day, May 28, for a matchup against the Native Sons Ultra. The Hurricanes continued scoring with ease as they cruised passed the Ultra 4-1.

After a break the Hurricanes returned to the pitch later on May 28 for their final round robin contest against Melfort’s Northern Internazionale. For the second time in three games the Hurricanes used a solid team defense to shut down Northern Internazionale as the Hurricanes won the game in a route 9-0.

Thanks to a perfect 3-0 record through the round robin portion of the tournament that saw them outscore their opponents 17-1 in the three matches the Hurricanes moved on to face the Hollandia Nimegeers in the championship final.

The Nimegeers came into the contest with a perfect 3-0 record of their own having yet to surrender a goal as they outscored their three opponents 14-0.

The final was a hard fought contest between the two teams that saw the Nimegeers pull out a narrow 2-1 victory that relegated the Hurricanes to the silver medalists.

U 14 Hurricanes win silver at Avalon

Humboldt U14 Hurricanes traveled to Saskatoon for their third tournament in four weeks to take part in the Harder Avalon Classic Soccer Tournament Jun. 3-5.

The Hurricanes opened the tournament on Jun. 3 with a game against the Lakewood Thunder winning the game 5-3.

Their next matchup was early on Jun. 4 when they took on the Yorkton United Football Club. The game did not go very well for the Hurricanes as they were beaten fairly easily by Yorkton 5-1.

Having already beaten the Thunder in their first match up the Hurricanes were nearly guaranteed a spot in the semi-final but a win in their final match up against the Saskatoon United Soccer Club would assure them of that.

The Hurricanes left nothing to chance as they played strong defensively shutting out Saskatoon 4-0 to advance to the semi-final.

As the number two seed in Pool B the Hurricanes crossed over to take on the number one seeds in Pool A the Flin Flon Storm Football Club.

In a tightly contested match it was the Hurricanes who snuck out a very close game beating the Storm 2-1 to advance to the championship final for a rematch with Yorkton.

After being easily beaten in their round robin match up the Hurricanes were out for revenge in the final to no avail as they were beaten even easier in the final losing 8-1.

For the second weekend in a row the Hurricanes were forced to settle for the silver medal as they brought their medal haul through three tournaments to a gold and two silvers.
