1973 - George Foreman knocks out Joe Frazier in the second round to win the heavyweight boxing title.

1980 - Professional Gold Association creates a senior golf tour.

1987 - After a blizzard in New Jersey the Devils play the Calgary Flames in front of 334 fans. The Devils won the NHL game 7-5.

1944 - The Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Rangers in the most lopsided NHL game by a score of 15-0. Detroit totalled 37 points in the game.

1979 - Seventeen years after Jackie Robinson was the first black player to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame Willie Mays earns the honour.

1981 - New York Islanders Mike Bossy becomes the first NHL player to score 50 goals in 50 games.

January 24

1950 - Jackie Robinson signs the highest contract in Dodgers history for $35,000.
