You could likely call it home course advantage, as the John Paul II golf team dominated the competition in the team category at the Battle West District Golf Tournament.

Tuesday, the golfers were on the course and at times had to deal with winds up to 78 km/h. The wind didn't factor is as too much of a distraction for the John Paul II team of Tyler Cockburn, Trenten Clarke, Dylan Dunbar and Brett Beniot. Tyler shot an 86 while Brett and Dylan shot 87s to finish in second, third and fourth.

The top golfer on the day was a surprise to no one, as Justin Wood, who has been dominating golf tournaments all summer, finished first in the district playdown with a score of 80.

Wood and Unity's Johan Kopp and Alex Pernitsky finished second in the team score with a mark of 288. Third was the team of T.J. Tipton, Marcus, Tipewan, Colton Poulin and Anthony Radke of Spiritwood. John Paul II winning team score was 255.

Wood, along with the John Paul II team, will advance to provincials in Prince Albert Sept. 21 and 22. The provincial format is different than districts, as golfers will have a practice round Thursday and play 18 holes and Friday and 18 more Saturday.

Four of the five male golfers from the Battle West district are Grade 12 students with Brett being the exception, as he is in Grade 9.

On the female side of the playdown, Brittany Bruneau of Leoville won with a score of 115. Second place went to Cheyenne Fineday of Spiritwood while Joushonda Bill of Pelican Lake was third.

The Pelican Lake team also qualified for provincials, but haven't confirmed whether they will be going to Prince Albert as a team.

Thirty-four junior golfers took to the North Battleford Golf and Country Club Tuesday with representatives from Pelican Lake, John Paul II, Unity Comprehensive High School, Spiritwood, McLurg High School in Wilkie, Leoville and Cut Knife.
