The strength of local football programs starts at the lowest levels.
The hard work of Battlefords Minor Football can be seen when players arrive for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Junior Vikings training camps, as they are more prepared for what things will be like at the high school level.
“We’ve seen big numbers and the new guys have big opportunities for them when they come up to the junior and senior levels after playing in flag and tackle football over the years,” Junior Vikings assistant coach and offensive coordinator Tanner Craig said.
“Our numbers our strong and the guys know what they are doing when they arrive in camp. They are all physically strong and they are very good athletically.”
The Junior Vikings are wrapping up two weeks of practice as they gear up for their first game of the Saskatoon Kinsmen Bantam Football League season this weekend.
They will welcome the Arns Falcons to town on Sunday for a 3 p.m. contest at Beaver Lions Stadium.
“A lot of what we have been working on this week is more of the fundamentals,” Craig said. “We want to see where the guys fit in on our team and what they are made of in tough situations.
“What I like about this team is that they are very coachable. They also adapt well to whatever’s in front of them. What guys make up for in a lack of size is a lot of speed and raw talent.”
After winning the league in 2014, the Vikings have a veteran squad returning this year and are eager to retain the league crown against a number of stout teams from Saskatoon.
“The guys that are back from last year remember the guys that they went up against a year ago and are looking forward to playing them again,” Craig said.
“We would like to be league champions but as a staff, we would really be happy with a strong season and being contenders going into the playoffs. The development of the players is the biggest thing and everything after that is a bonus.”
