The North Battleford Comprehensive High School girls' volleyball program looks to be setup up well for the future.
"The Grade 9s right now are a really strong group," explained coach Bryan Cottini. "Next year with us getting the eights we probably will not be running a JV team. All of those Grade 9s will have to play up at the senior level next year."
The reason there is optimism around the future senior teams is because of the success of this year's JV team. The NBCHS Vikings team made up of Grade 9 and 10s played in five senior tournaments and two junior ones this season.
When it came to districts, the Vikings couldn't use their Grade 10 players, but that didn't affect the result.
The Vikings were first after their round robin at districts at John Paul II. From there they beat Macklin, who they thought would be their opponent in the final. Macklin beat the Vikings weeks earlier in the two straight sets, but at districts it was the Vikings coming out on top in three sets.
In the championship game, NBCHS beat Unity in two sets and capped off an impressive season with district gold medals.
There were eight teams playing at the district season.
One of the Vikings' Grade 9 players has also been called up to join the senior Vikings provincial run, which gets started this weekend with Regionals at John Paul II.
