NIPAWIN — The Nipawin Hawks is having their second annual Sports Gala.

The fundraising event takes place Nov. 17 at the Evergreen Centre in Nipawin.

“Last year we were around the $10,000 mark and we would really like to raise that much again,” said Shyne Pickering, volunteer with the Nipawin Hawks. “We’re a non-profit organization so everything we do is by fundraising events and ticket sales. Just in support of our local communities.”

Last year the gala had seen over 200 people, which is what they are hoping for this year. The gala will feature NHL alumni Kelly Chase and figure skater Jamie Salé.

“They tell stories about their careers and how they got to where they were and what they’re up to now,” Pickering said. “And somebody just asks them questions on a hot seat.”

Kelly Chase grew up in Porcupine Plain, playing with Humboldt Broncos before going on to be a winger for the NHL. Jamie Salé is a 2001 world champion and won a Canadian gold medal in the 2002 Olympics.

Comedian Lars Callieou will also be there.

“We bring in sports memorabilia as well. Autographed hockey jerseys, baseball jerseys, signed Saskatchewan Rough Rider football. Stuff like that.”

All these memorabilia items will be auctioned off at the event. It will also be the last chance for people to buy tickets for another Nipawin Hawks fundraising event, which is to win a trip to Vancouver to attend an NHL game. The winner will be announced at the Gala.

Tickets are on sale until Nov. 13 at 5 pm and can be purchased from the Hawks which can be reached at 306-862-2748.
