For the first time since the 1980s the Battlefords Skating Club will be hosting a competition.

The STARSkate Competition is a three-day provincial championship featuring the best youth skaters Saskatchewan has to offer. The event allows Skate Canada to feature and recognize the STARSkaters in Saskatchewan.

The local committee expects more than 190 skaters to attend ranging from six to 17 years old and representing 35 skating clubs across the province.

The coaching representative for the local club, Cindy Tymoruski, said the process for the local club to apply and finally host the event took about two years. A handful of local skaters are entered.

"It is a good challenger," said Tymoruski earlier this week, as the club received a major sponsorship donation from Innovation Credit Union for the weekend's events. She added, "Overall, determination to get better is what the skaters work towards."

For the skaters, the focus at this competition is to make the most of this learning opportunity both on and off the ice. This event is generally used to assist with team selection to the Skate Canada - Saskatchewan Competitive Development Team.

The local skaters are in the final week of preparation for their routines and will continue with their intense practice schedule leading up to the competition.

The competition begins Jan. 27 at 8:30 a.m. and will come to an end around 5 p.m. Jan. 29 after three days of skating at the Civic Centre. There will be a 50/50 draw along with an admission draw for a 42? TV. Ultimately, there is no reason to not check out the action. Admission is just $2 a day or $5 for the weekend.
