Seventeen of players of the Sask Can 2002 team, which includes players from the area, as well as other parts of Saskatchewan, along with Alberta and Manitoba, earned the gold medal at the AAA North American Hockey Classic in Winnipeg last weekend.

The tournament in Winnipeg featured more than 100 teams from across North America in all age division. Before the championship tournament, Sask Can played in tournaments in Edmonton and Saskatoon.

Keanu Foulds of North Battleford teammate Evan Herman tied for second in the tournament in points. Other locals on the team included coach Ken Ralston and son Colby from Unity, Carson Dobson and Brandon Kelly from Dodsland, Brayden Koch from Neilburg and Russell Hicks from Glaslyn.

In the first round robin game, Sask Can lost 6-4 to the Manitoba Lighting. They never lost after that, as they won 7-5 over the Manitoba Hawks, 11-1 over the Junior Steelers and 4-3 over the Northern Alberta Stars Badgers to round out the round robin.

In the semi final, the Sask Can played the Can West Cobras, a team they had lost two previous games to in other tournaments. Sask Can earned the 5-3 win to advance to the championship game against the Manitoba Lighting. Keanu scored a hat trick in the final and helped his team win 7-5 to earn the championship.

Six Sask Can players were in the tournaments top 20 in scoring as the season, which began in April, came to and end in a perfect way with a North American golf medal.
